“My works are purely expressionistic (non representational at all) and the paintings almost always themselves dictate composition and palette when started. The attention that my first few shows received encouraged me and made me realise that this [painting] was what I was supposed to do and also then gave me the confidence to really explore the sort of painting that interested me. My first show in Sydney which sold out in 1999 was a turning point. I am challenged by my work and this style of work because I want to be surprised and excited by a piece when it is finished as much as an interested viewer. I try to make sure that a work will live on and interest a viewer for longer than an initial first meeting, sort of like a song that slowly becomes a favourite as opposed to a hit that is instantly loved and then forgotten.”
